There are a few new things we have this week:

The Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev ended a four-week marathon of music by Tchaikovsky, performed in full symphonic cycles, individual symphonies and instrumental concertos, which were played in Beijing, USA and Canadian cities, Astrakhan (Russia), and Baden-Baden (Germany).

In the week of school holiday break at the Mariinsky Theatre we present opera and ballet performances from the regular repertoire: a different show each night. At the end of this week, on stage of the Mariinsky Concert Hall, we again present Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream staged by Claudia Solti, last premiere of the previous season, one of the brightest productions designed specially for the Mariinsky Concert Hall (November 5th6th). Concert life at the Mariinsky Concert Hall of this week will be marked by a symphony concert of works by Rachmaninov and Bruckner performed by Nikolai Lugansky and Nikolaj Znaider (November 3rd), and the performance of one of the greatest Verdi’s works, Requiem, by the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and leading soloists: Olga Borodina, Viktoria Yastrebova, Ildar Abdrazakov and Sergei Semishkur, under the baton of Valery Gergiev (November 6th).

Till November 6th, the Mariinsky Ballet continues its residency on stage of the Teatro Regio in Turin (performing Swan Lake).

Have a good week!

A concert on November 3rd at the Mariinsky Concert Hall will present works by Rachmaninov and Bruckner that brought a wide recognition to their authors. Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is a true pearl of Russian classical music, a work he composed at the tremendous rise in his creative powers. Seventh Symphony is one of the best Bruckner’s symphonies, in which the titanic scale of the work is combined with romantic charm, it has brought a long-awaited triumph for the sixty-year-old composer.

Nikolai Lugansky, who will play a solo part in Rachmaninov’s concerto, has won the prestigious Echo Klassik Award in 2005 for the recording of the Second and Fourth Concertos by Rachmaninov on the Warner Classics record label. Music by Western European composers is especially close to Nikolaj Znaider, who unites talents of soloist, conductor and chamber musician.

One of the notable highlights of the 2011/12 concert season in Munich is the performance of the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s Symphonies conducted by Valery Gergiev. The series starts this week. This is a joint project by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mariinsky Theatre (soloists, choir, orchestra). Fifteen symphonies by one of the greatest classics of the 20th century present one of the most important facets of his work, the chronicle of his life that reflects the key points in the composer’s biography. The complete cycle of fifteen symphonies by Shostakovich have already been performed under the baton of Valery Gergiev with the participation of various orchestras (always including the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra) in New York (Avery Fisher Hall), London (Barbican), Vienna (Konzerthaus) and the university town of Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA), becoming a significant event in the cultural life of each.

Six of the fifteen Shostakovich’s symphonies, as well as his opera The Nose, were recorded and released on the Mariinsky Label, Mariinsky Theatre’s own record label. To make a recording of all Shostakovich’s symphonies in an advanced SACD format is one of the directions for the development of the Mariinsky Label, as seen by Valery Gergiev.
