The new week has started now.

The Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev completed their three-week tour of the USA & Canada.

Some great works from the Russian repertoire will be performed at the Mariinsky Theatre this week: take notice at Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina on October 26th and Prokofiev’s The Gambler on October 27th.

Daniil Trifonov, 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition Grand Prix Winner will play for a pair of nights at the Mariinsky Concert Hall: on October 25th in a concert with the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, performing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, and in a solo recital on October 26th.

Later this week, the Orchestra and Valery Gergiev will go to the Russian city of Astrakhan to perform an inaugural concert for the new Opera and Ballet Theatre there and then continuing on to Baden-Baden Festspiealhaus for a three-evening residency of all-Tchaikovsky programs featuring his symphonies and instrumental concertos performed by 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition Winners.

The Mariinsky Ballet continues its residency on stage of the Teatro Regio in Turin (La Bayadère and Swan Lake).

That’s how this week goes!

USA & Canada tour reviews

A three-week tour of the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev in the USA & Canada has come to a close. We have performed 18 concerts over 21 day at 11 venues (including a five-concert residency at the Carnegie Hall, which has launched a new season there, 120 years since Tchaikovsky conducted at the opening of inaugural season there). A complete Tchaikovsky Symphony cycle has been played twice (at the Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley).

Take a look at our Facebook page posts on what we’ve been up to and how audiences received us (perhaps you were one of them).

On the Mariinsky web-site, you can read some selected press reviews on our North American concerts: covering the USA East Coast (7 concerts) the USA West Coast (7 concerts) and Canada (4 concerts). These pages contain direct links to articles publsihed in media.

We have been delighted to receive numerous tweets from our North American fans and to interact with them beyond the stage: on twitter, as we’ve been travelling through the USA and Canadian cities.

On October 28th, 29th & 30th, the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev will hold a three-evening residency at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus performing a complete cycle of Tchaikovsky’s numbered symphonies and his instrumental works. Solo parts will be performed by the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition Winners: Daniil Trifonov (piano, 1st Prize, Grand Prix), Narek Hakhnazaryan (cello, 1st Prize) and Sergei Dogadin (violin, 2nd Prize, 1st Prize was not awarded).

Baden-Baden will become the fourth music venue over the last month where the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev performs a cycle of SIX Symphonies by Tchaikovsky (other three are Beijing, New York and Berkeley). Previously, we performed the complete Tchaikovsky cycle only once at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in January 2010 when we have made a live recording of Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6, which were released on the Mariinsky Label in DVD and Blu-Ray formats earlier this month and been made available exclusively on iTunes for audio download.

Valery Gergiev, the President of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition, feels it is highly important to provide all Competition Winners with an opportunity to hold an active concert schedule, focussing entirely on music, developing their talents and advancing musical skills, rather than spending time on organisational issues. Joint concerts by the Competition Winners and world-class orchestras under Valery Gergiev at major concert halls are one of his top priorities.
