The 20th Stars of the White Nights Music Festival in St Petersburg has come to a close last night. This year, the Festival has been running for 52 days, from May 25 till July 15, and has presented 95 events at the Mariinsky Theatre and the Mariinsky Concert Hall.

In the final week of the 229th season, the Mariinsky Theatre will present Frederick Loewe’s musical My Fair Lady produced by renowned Canadian director Robert Carsen. Premiere of this production at the Mariinsky Theatre was received in February (a co-production with the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris). The production gave us a great opportunity for experimenting with a genre, which is new to the Mariinsky and combines music, singing, dialogues and dance. The production features spectacular scenery, lush costumes, exquisite play of drama actors and a range of bright director’s ideas.

An international star and a soloist with the Mariinsky Opera, soprano Anna Netrebko will give a gala-recital at the Mariinsky Theatre on Friday, July 20 that will include her favourite arias and vocal numbers from Anna’s wide operatic and concert repertoire. A donation of 1 million rubles from ticket sales to this recital will be transferred by the Mariinsky Theatre to victims of the flood in Kuban, Russia that happened on the night of July 7. Anna Netrebko, who herself is a native of Krasnodar (capital of Kuban), has had an especially hard time watching the tragedy unfold in her home region. For her, this donation represents an important token of support. The Mariinsky Theatre has already transferred a donation of 1 million rubles that have been collected from ticket sales to a concert at the Mariinsky Concert Hall on Sunday, July 8 that featured the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Opera soloists Olga Sergeyeva and Yuri Vorobiev and Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, who has been blind from birth and whose talent has proved that music knows no borders.

The Mariinsky Concert Hall will close its season with an evening in memory of St Petersburg composer Valery Gavrilin on Tuesday, July 17.

We wish you an enjoyable week!

The Mariinsky Opera, Chorus and Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will give a series of performances at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus from July 20 to 23. A German resort, favoured by Russian aristocracy of the 19th century, nowadays it attracts tourists not only by its beautiful nature, mineral spas and a set of health treatments, but also by a selection of musical programs presented at one of the largest concert and operatic stages in Europe. During the season, the stage of the Festspielhaus, which was diverted from a former railway station, hosts a variety of finest ballet companies and orchestras along with world-class conductors and soloists, in addition to three or four full-length opera productions.

Since its launch in April 1998, the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus is a regular residency for the Mariinsky Theatre. The Mariinsky Opera, Ballet and Orchestra have been performing there almost every year. This season, the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and Winners of the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition gave a series of concerts at the Festspielhaus in October 2011, and the Mariinsky Ballet performed there in December 2011.

This July, the Mariinsky Opera presents Baden-Baden audiences with Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov in a new production by Graham Vick that received its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre less than two months ago and caused a huge and varied public response, exacerbating problems of perception of modern productions by contemporary audiences. A pair of concerts at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus will feature Mahler’s Second Symphony and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestrated by Ravel) as well as Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto that will be starring pianist Denis Matsuev, a regular participant of Valery Gergiev’s musical projects.
