The Festival will feature three solo recitals, three concerts with an orchestra and a unique piano marathon, which will feature four soloists. On December 1st, the Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen, who made his debut on stage of the Mariinsky Concert Hall in April this year, will perform works by Bach, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich. His style of play distinguishes by the creativeness in interpreting music works, making him a real co-author to a composer. On December 2nd, the Irish pianist and conductor Barry Douglas will perform works by Handel, Brahms and Mussorgsky. The performance of Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky brought him victory at the 8th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986 and still is one of the most popular recordings made by Douglas. On December 6th, the young Russian pianist Rem Urasin, often referred as “Chopin’s messenger”, will perform works by Bach, Schumann, Chopin and Scarlatti. On December 8th, the young Russian pianist Alexander Lubyantsev will play in a concert with the participation of the Stradivari Ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of Igor Gruppman. At the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, he had literally taken audiences and critics by the brightness of his performance and his performer’s charm. The December 3rd matinee concert is remarkable as it features two pianists: a teacher and his student. Sergei Babayan, who often performs with famous world orchestras, and Daniil Trifonov, 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition Grand Prix Winner. In the concert with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under Valery Gergiev they will play most popular works by Rachmaninov: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and the Third Piano Concerto. The most well-known and recognised participant of the Festival, the Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire, will appear at the December 3rd evening concert. Known for his interpretations of romantic works, the musician will play solo part in Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under Valery Gergiev will also perform Greig’s Holberg Suite and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. The central event of the Festival will be a piano marathon on December 4th. It gives a rare opportunity to listen in one evening not only very different performers, but also works that rarely appear in a single concert. Honored master of the Russian piano school Sergei Babayan will be the soloist in Beethoven’s romantic concerto. Known for his experiments Olli Mustonen will perform Bartók’s last, unfinished concerto. To complement performances of these widely recognised musicians, the two young pianists, winners of international competitions will appear on stage: Daniil Trifonov and Rustam Muradov. They will perform piano concertos by Franz Liszt, whose bicentenary the music world celebrates this year. The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will accompany all four soloists. |
