Last week, we launched a new season of ballets, operas and concerts in St Petersburg. As always, our theater offers lots of different kinds of events — to satisfy every taste and demand.

The Mariinsky Concert Hall season began with three performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca — one of the most brilliant, very well received premieres of the last season. Next time, this production will be presented on November 15th, 17th and 19th. Tickets are on sale on our web-site: from 400 to 1200 rub.

The first in the new season Verdi’s opera at the Mariinsky Theatre is Macbeth, one of three Shakespearean operas written by the composer. This Autumn at the Mariinsky Theatre, we once again present a series of Verdi’s most popular masterpieces staged in a traditional way: Rigoletto on October 15th, Aida on October 16th and November 1st, La Traviata on November 5th and Attila on November 8th.

You can further explore works by Verdi in a pair of gala-concerts: on October 21st, at the Mariinsky Theatre — selected works for chorus and orchestra performed by the Teatro di San Carlo (Naples) and on October 29th, at the Mariinsky Concert Hall — famous choirs and scenes from Verdi’s operas performed by the Mariinsky Chorus and Orchestra.

One of the greatest Verdi’s works, Requiem, will be performed on November 6th, at the Mariinsky Concert Hall by the Mariinsky Orchestra, Chorus and leading soloists: Olga Borodina, Viktoria Yastrebova, Ildar Abdrazakov and Sergei Semishkur, under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

We wish you a pleasant visit!

Macbeth is the first of three Shakespearean operas composed by Verdi (the other two are Otello and Falstaff). Its music was written in 1846−1847 and the world premiere of the opera took place at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence on 14 March 1847. Almost twenty years later, Théâtre Lyrique in Paris invited the composer to amend the opera with some more music: as a result, Verdi almost completely revised the score. The premiere of the new version took place on 21 April 1865. The second version became more popular since its first performance.

The opera is close enough to the text of Shakespeare’s play, but there are some important differences. For example, Shakespeare’s three witches were replaced with the chorus of witches with the three parts of varying tones. By the way, the chorus of witches is assigned to one of the main roles in this opera. In addition, the last scene starts with the gathering of rebels at the Anglo-Scottish border and ends with a chorus, praising the victory and overthrow of a tyrant. This is going after Shakespeare’s final.

The current production was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre by David McVicar in the centenary year of Verdi’s death and for 10 years now, it has gone through many regular performances. The staging features an outwardly simple design and decor, which almost perfectly conveys the gloomy spirit of the Shakespeare’s play, putting into focus the inner drama of each of the main characters.
