| The 231st season has been launched at three Mariinsky stages in St Petersburg and during the first week has already proved its high intensity. The season started with performances of operas by Verdi and Wagner performed by members of the Mariinsky Opera, Chorus and Orchestra under Valery Gergiev marking bicentenaries of both composers. The new season at the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) was launched with the performance of Rodion Shchedrin’s opera The Lefthander that received its world premiere a few weeks ago. The opera was dedicated to opening of the new theatre. The ballet season has kicked off with performances of hallmark productions of the Mariinsky Ballet — Prokofiev/Lavrovsky’s Romeo and Juliet (marking Irina Kolpakova’s 80th birthday) and Glazunov/Petipa’s Raymonda. The first week has featured the 1st International Organ Festival that took place at the Mariinsky Concert Hall from September 11 to 15. The Mariinsky II hosted the world premiere of the cinema performance of Tchaikovsky’s opera Iolanta directed by Mariusz Treliński (2009) starring soprano Anna Netrebko in the title role. The same day saw the cinema performance of the ballet Swan Lake that was filmed live in 3D format at the historical Mariinsky Theatre this June. The Mariinsky Label released its 20th recording — Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold featuring an international cast of opera soloists. The Shchedrin Chamber Hall at the Mariinsky II has hosted its first concert of chamber music. The way the Mariinsky works in the new season is going to be even more intensive than ever. Three famous instrumentalists — violinist Vadim Repin, pianist Nikolai Lugansky and cellist Alexander Kniazev
will play a recital at the Mariinsky Concert Hall on Friday,
September 20.
The program will feature Piano Trio No. 2 in C major by Johannes Brahms
and Piano Trio in A minor “In Memory of a Great Artist” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
Both trios were composed around the same time and both received their premieres in 1882. Along with works by Haydn and Beethoven, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 forms the basis of the classical Viennese school of chamber music, albeit it stands out by being a masterpiece of the late Romanticism. Piano Trio “In Memory of a Great Artist” represents a tribute to the friendship of two great musicians: Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rubinstein. Tchaikovsky dedicated the work to the memory of his friend and mentor who passed away early. Ten years later, the young Rachmaninov would compose his Trio élégiaque in memory of Tchaikovsky. Thus, Tchaikovsky invented the tradition of epitaphic trios that received its further development in the 20th century.
Each of the three instrumentalists enjoys an extremely intensive performance schedule appearing in solo recitals and with orchestras at the finest concert halls around the world. This season all three appear together playing trios by Brahms and Tchaikovsky only twice — in St Petersburg and in Moscow two days later.

Most recognised and probably most popular Russian ballet, a landmark production of classical St Petersburg style, the Mariinsky Swan Lake
was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895
and revised by Konstantin Sergeyev in 1950.
The Italian tour features Olga Esina, Ulyana Lopatkina and Oxana Skorik in the role of Odette-Odile who appear alongside, respectively, Timur Askerov, Yevgeny Ivanchenko and Vladimir Shklyarov as Prince Siegfried. Ivan Sitnikov and Konstantin Zverev share performances dancing the role of von Rothbart. Tchaikovsky’s score is being played by the Orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo conducted by Mikhail Agrest.

On Wednesday, September 25
and Thursday, September 26
the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) will host performances by the Ballet Company of the
Teatro di San Carlo, Naples.
St Petersburg will see the Russian premiere of the staged version of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana
directed by the Chinese choreographer Shen Wei, who also created the visual concept, choreography, sets, costumes, lighting and video projection.
These performances will also feature members of the Shen Wei Dance Arts Company
as well as members of the Mariinsky Opera, Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Jordi Bernàcer.
The Teatro di San Carlo was on tour in St Petersburg two years ago and presented Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca as well as a concert of works by Verdi.

In the 2012/13 season the Mariinsky Opera mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina had celebrated two important anniversaries —
her personal one as well as 25 years since her debut at the Mariinsky Theatre. Olga Borodina has performed virtually all lead mezzo-soprano roles
at the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. People’s Artist of Russia, the recipient of numerous prizes, among them the State Prize of the Russian Federation
and a Grammy in the category “Best Classical Album” —
these are just a few awards that reflect her incredible contribution to the art of opera.
On Sunday, September 22, Olga Borodina will appear at the Mariinsky Theatre in her Jubilee Concert that will feature the 1st Act from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, the 2nd Act from Borodin’s Prince Igor and the 4th Act from Bizet’s Carmen. Her colleagues — members of the Mariinsky Ballet, Opera and Chorus as well as the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Tugan Sokhiev will accompany her on stage this evening.

Next week sees three concerts featuring pianist Vadym Kholodenko,
winner of the 14th International Van Cliburn Piano Competition (June 2013),
who will play at the Mariinsky Concert Hall.
The pianist who made a real sensation at the competition will appear in various capacities — alongside the symphony orchestra, in a solo recital and in a chamber music recital. He will play works of different genres: Grieg’s Piano Concerto — in a concert on Monday, September 23; works by Mozart, Liszt and Rachmaninov — in his solo recital on Tuesday, September 24; sonatas and trios by Michael Nyman, Alexei Kurbatov, Rachmaninov and Brahms — in the chamber music recital on Thursday, September 26. Three concerts featuring Vadym Kholodenko continue an important mission performed by the Mariinsky Theatre, which is to introduce to audiences those young performers that will soon be defining the future of the classical music. |

In September-October members of the Mariinsky Opera, Chorus and Orchestra will be performing works by Hector Berlioz.
A pair of symphonies — Harold en Italie (for orchestra and solo viola) and Symphony fantastique
(“An Episode in the Life of an Artist”) will be played at the Mariinsky Concert Hall
on September 25.
Same hall will see the performance of Berlioz’s dramatic symphony Roméo et Juliette
(for mixed voices and orchestra) and cantata La mort de Cléopâtre
(for a voice and orchestra) on Saturday,
October 19.
Berlioz’s monumental grand opera Les Troyens will be performed
in concert at the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) on Monday,
October 21.
The music of Berlioz has often been cited as extremely influential in the development of the symphonic form, instrumentation, and the depiction in music of programmatic and literary ideas, features central to musical Romanticism. He was considered extremely progressive for his day and made significant contributions to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Instrumentation. Berlioz specified huge orchestral forces for some of his works. His influence was critical for the further development of Romanticism, especially in composers like Wagner, Rimsky-Korsakov, Liszt, Mahler, Richard Strauss and many others. Works by Berlioz are often performed by the Mariinsky forces. Besides the pieces mentioned above, recent concerts featured his Requiem (Grande messe des morts) and dramatic legend La damnation de Faust. Last season, Berlioz’s opera Benvenuto Cellini had been performed in concert in St Petersburg and on tour in a few cities. |

performing a programme chosen from audience requests. In order to define the programme, you need to visit

Three arias for each performer that will acquire most votes will be performed in the concert. The first concert of such kind will take place on Monday,
September 30 and will feature soprano Oxana Shilova, mezzo-soprano Nadezhda Serdyuk,
tenor Yevgeny Akimov, baritone Vladimir Moroz and bass Ilya Bannik.
