Monday, June 10, 8:00PM
The Israeli Batsheva Dance Company that has been critically acclaimed and popularly embraced as one of the most exciting contemporary dance companies in the world will make their guest appearance at the Mariinsky Theatre with a pair of performances on Sunday, June 9 and Monday, June 10. Batsheva Dance Company was founded as a repertory company in 1964 by the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, who enlisted Martha Graham as artistic advisor. Together with its junior Batsheva Ensemble, which cultivates dancers from ages 18-24 and carries out the educational agenda of Batsheva, the organisation boasts a roster of 40 dancers drawn from Israel and abroad. Touring extensively throughout the country and internationally, the two companies present 250 performances annually.

The Batsheva Dance Company’s tour to Russia is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of founding of the State of Israel. St Petersburg audiences will see Deca Dance based on Charles Bukowski’s works with the original music and music design & editing by Maxim Waratt. The work was choreographed by Ohad Naharin, the company’s Artistic Director since 1990.

The company practices Ohad Naharin’s adventurous curatorial vision, distinctive choreographic voice, and revolutionary movement language, Gaga. Through daily training in Gaga, Batsheva’s dancers research new movement possibilities and awaken their dynamic sensitivity. They bring an eager curiosity and ripe imagination to rehearsals, where they participate actively in the creative process.

Igor Stravinsky Le Sacre du printemps
Mariinsky II (new stage)
Saturday, June 22, 7:00PM
The Mariinsky Ballet completed their three-day tour of the Parisian Théâtre des Champs Elysées marking the centenary since the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps that was received in Paris on May 29, 1913. The ballet, which received its premiere as part of the season of Les Ballets Russes de Serge de Diaghilev choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky with set design and costumes by Nicholas Roerich, immediately became one of the most famous of all classical music riots. On the just completed tour at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra under Valery Gergiev have presented Le Sacre in a pair of versions — the original Nijinsky’s version and the modern one choreographed by Sasha Waltz for the occasion of the centenary of Stravinsky’s score. The latter version was premiered at the new Mariinsky Theatre two weeks ago.

Both versions of Le Sacre will next be performed in St Petersburg, at the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) on Saturday, June 22. Both will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Sergei Prokofiev The Gambler
New recording by the Mariinsky Label
Monday, June 3 sees the release of Sergei Prokofiev’s opera The Gambler, which will become the 19th recording released by the Mariinsky Label and the second video recording of an opera (following last month’s release of Verdi’s Attila). The Gambler will be available in both DVD and Blu-Ray formats.

The opera libretto is based upon Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s autobiographic novel of the same title. The upcoming release features the production staged by Temur Chkheidze that was filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre in June 2010. The recording stars Vladimir Galuzin in the role of Alexei, indisputably one of the world’s leading dramatic tenors, known for his unrivalled stentorious voice and extremely vivid characterisations of some of the most demanding roles. He is ably supported by the cast of leading soloists of the Mariinsky Opera — soprano Tatiana Pavlovskaya as Pauline, bass Sergei Aleksashkin in the role of The General, mezzo-soprano Larisa Dyadkova as Babulenka, tenor Nikolai Gassiev as Marquis et al. as well as by members of the Mariinsky Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.
